What If Heaven Is Play? Heaven According to the Bible

When most people think about Heaven, they imagine eternal rest. But what if we've misunderstood the meaning of rest?

When I hear the phrase eternal rest, my imagination pictures sitting still... forever....

I love naps.

I love Sabbath.

I often need rest. But rest without creating, exploring, laughing, or playing?

When I was little, I asked my parents what Heaven would be like. They smiled and said, "Heaven is your favorite thing forever."

At the time, my favorite thing was playing in the pool.

Years later, I realized they had given me something deeper than an understanding that Heaven is my backyard pool. They gave me permission to imagine Heaven as joyful, playful, and wonderfully alive.

We Are Children of God and Children Play

"See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!" (1 John 3:1)

God could have primarily called us servants.

Or employees.

Instead, He calls us sons and daughters.

Children don't need lessons in play.

They imagine.

They build.

They create.

They explore.

They laugh.

They dance.

They delight in the world around them.

And God delights in His children playing.

Play isn't wasted time. It's one of the natural expressions of being a beloved child. If we are children of God, perhaps play isn't something we eventually outgrow. Perhaps it's something we redeem .

Heaven According to the Bible

God's final plan isn't to abandon His creation, but to redeem it. The Bible doesn't end with people escaping the earth. It ends with a new Heaven and a new Earth (Revelation 21–22). Sin, death, suffering, and decay are removed, and creation becomes what it was always meant to be.

Heaven according to the Bible is a great city where people live together in perfect peace. There is a river of the water of life, clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God. Along its banks grows the Tree of Life, bearing fresh fruit every month, its leaves bringing healing to the nations (Revelation 22:1–2).

This isn't the picture of people floating on clouds.

It's a world overflowing with beauty, abundance, and life.

The curse is gone.

Death is gone.

Tears are gone.

Fear is gone.

The work God gives His people continues, but without frustration or exhaustion. We reign with Christ (Revelation 22:5), exercising the joyful stewardship humanity was originally given in the Garden of Eden.

Our relationships are restored. Every conversation is free from misunderstanding. Every meal is shared in perfect love. 

This vision changes how we live today. If the future Kingdom is filled with beauty, friendship, feasting, and play, then these aren't merely earthly pleasures. They're glimpses of our eternal home.

Why This Matters Today

Play reminds us that our worth isn't measured by our productivity, achievements, or the number of items we check off a to-do list. In a culture that constantly asks, "What have you accomplished?" play quietly asks a different question, "Can you simply enjoy being alive?"

When we play, we practice trusting instead of striving. We create without fear of failure. We enjoy the people around us rather than treating them as projects to complete.

Becoming Secret Saints

Secret Saints know they are children before they are workers.

Every shared meal.

Every board game.

Every campfire.

Every swim.

Every hike.

Every dance.

Every burst of laughter with friends becomes a small foretaste of the Kingdom to come.

Maybe play is preparing us for Heaven?
